Project:
Replacement of Kalmut and Talberg tunnels

Service period:
2014 – 2018

Project client:
DB Netz AG

Project volume:
€ 3,000,000

Project description

The 124 m and 144 m long tunnels are on route 3020 from Boppard to Emmelshausen (Hunsrückbahn). The route is in an inaccessible hillside location, and overcomes a good 300 m altitude between Boppard and Buchholz, as a steep section with over 6%. The tunnels opened in 1908 must be replaced, due to extensive damage patterns to the tunnel shell.

Apart from finding the cross section and determination of the scope of replacement, whereby the current regulations had to be applied, construction logistics issues were intensively highlighted, and variants were evaluated. In the course of the execution planning, a wall replacement was planned, up to a depth of 10 cm, with steel fibre reinforced sprayed concrete.
